The Best of Philly Soul Vol. 1
Len Barry

This CD features 18 songs, plus an intro, by the great, soulful artist, Len Barry. Len wrote and co-wrote 12 of the songs on the CD. Recorded between 1963 and 1970 (some of which have never been released until now), these songs show Len Barry's incredible talent with a style that was uniquely his own.
Len Barry achieved worldwide success with his #1 record, "1-2-3," written by Len and the record producing/songwriting team of John Madara & Dave White. What followed were two other smash hits, "Like A Baby," again written by Len and Madara & White, and "Somewhere," written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the film "West Side Story." All three songs were produced by Madara & White.
Before going out on his own as a solo artist, Len Barry achieved success as the lead singer of The Dovells. They had several top 20 hits, including the #2 record, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down," which reached #3.
This historical CD contains valuable information, when available, on the musicians who played on each song, the year the song was recorded and the studio where it was recorded. Two of the musicians were unknowns, Leon Huff and Daryl Hall, both discovered by John Madara, before they hooked up with Kenny Gamble and John Oates.
This one-of-a-kind CD is presented by John Madara. Besides co-writing with Len and producing "1-2-3," Madara & White wrote and produced such timeless classics as "At The Hop," (Danny and The Juniors), "The Fly" (Chubby Checker), and "You Don't Own Me" (Leslie Gore). These and countless other hits by Madara & White helped to create "The Sound of Philadelphia."
All songs have been digitally restored and digitally mastered.

***** GREAT CD; GREAT SERVICE. This CD contained several songs I have spent years scouring the Internet for. They are available NOWHERE else, including such vendors as Amazon.com. Delivery extremely fast, had my CD 48-hours after placing order. Will definitely shop here again. - Reviewer: Jeff Gajewski - CD Baby
***** GREAT CD - worth it for You're My Picasso Baby alone. Awsome CD, with the big 3 hard to get items for us Northern Soul fans, I'll Always Love You, I'm In Love and of course Len's great version of Bobby Hebbs' Love, Love, Love. As a bonus there's also a favorite of mine, You're My Picasso Baby, which I've yet to find elsewhere. If only Len's Decca singles were still available on CD - I'd be in heaven. -

***** Love Love Love. Well you can't own the original lost LP, so make up for it with this great CD, it's worth it for the lost tracks "I'll always need you" Len's version of Dean Courtney's classic 45, then there's Len's great version of BobbyHebbs "Love Love Love", but top dog for me is the "I'm in love"track, this is spellbinding Philly Northern Soul at it's very best, just why this didn't come out as a 45 is beyond me, but it's here now so do yourself a favor and buy it. - Reviewer: funkyfeet - CD Baby
***** Excellent archive collection of Philly pop and soul. Excellent archive material of interest to all soul and Philly fans. It's fascinating to learn how much Len Barry and John Madara were involved in the early development of soul in
Philadelphia, along with Gamble, Huff, Bell and others. Some excellent songs - including Len's original versions of 'Love Love Love' (Bobby Hebb) and probably 'Lazy Susan' (Spinners, Little Anthony). Great mastering and interesting track info. -
